In a new interview for Art Recognition’s In the Spotlight series, Giuseppe Vigneri speaks with Jane Adams, co-founder and CEO of Artemisia Gold, about the role restoration, technical investigation and research can play in recovering the histories of women artists who have been overlooked for centuries.
Adams reflects on the experiences that led to the founding of Artemisia Gold and the organisation’s work with artists including Artemisia Gentileschi, Suor Plautilla Nelli and Plautilla Bricci. The conversation considers not only how paintings can be physically restored, but how technical analysis can uncover evidence absent from traditional written sources—from underdrawings and pentimenti to pigments, workshop practices and even previously hidden signatures.
The interview also explores the importance of approaching new attributions with rigour. Adams discusses how technical analysis, archival research and comparison with securely attributed works can help expand the canon without allowing the excitement of rediscovery to overtake the evidence.
At the heart of the conversation is Artemisia Gold’s newest major restoration project: Plautilla Bricci’s The Birth of the Virgin, c. 1660, which remains in the Church of Santa Maria in Campo Marzio in Rome. Adams discusses the research supporting its attribution, its commission by Abbess Anna Maria Mazzarino and the significance of recovering not only Bricci’s story, but also the history of the female patron who made the work possible.
Looking to the future, Adams sets out a wider ambition for Artemisia Gold: a time when artists such as Bricci and Nelli no longer need to be described as “rediscovered”, but are recognised as an integral part of art history through restoration, scholarship, education and exhibition.
